Last month, Kieran Culkin revealed that he very nearly dropped out of his latest movie, A Real Pain, before Emma Stone managed to convince him to stay on the project.
Kieran is very open about being a family man first and foremost, and in a new interview with Vulture, he admitted that shooting Succession taught him that he can only be away from his wife and kids for eight days before “plunging into dissociative despair.”
And in his new profile for Vulture, both Kieran and Emma reflected on the details of their initial phone call, where Kieran exposed the clever tactics that stopped him from dropping out.
“She did an almost reverse psychology thing on me,” he claimed. “She was like, ‘Oh, I totally get that. If I were you, I’d probably feel that way.’ And I was like, ‘But have they started?’ She goes, ‘Oh, yeah. They’re actually already in Poland scouting locations; people are hired.’”
Kieran still had to spend three weeks away from his family for the shoot, and previously told Vogue: “I was in panic mode the whole time. I just went to this horrible place.”
Thankfully, all’s well that ends well, and A Real Pain starring both Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin will be released in the United States on Nov. 1.
