Halle Bailey is truly confused by a comment she's been receiving from "so many" fans, and now, I think I'm torn by it as well.
Over the weekend, The Little Mermaid star took to Snapchat to share bits about her day with her followers. While doing so, she asked them their opinion on a recent run-in with a fan.
The Grammy-nominated artist revealed that when some fans meet her in person, one of the first things they tell her is, "You're so much prettier in person!"
"So, can I ask a question," Halle said. "I have had so many people come up to me — who are so nice, y'all are so nice — the first thing you say to me is, 'Wow, you're so much prettier in person!'"
"Do I look ugly in pictures or something? Or do I look...what does that mean?"
Halle couldn't help but feel like the comment was a "backhanded compliment." She then wondered if she was reading too much into it, even questioning if her period was making her "too sensitive."
"Or is that like, 'So you thought I was not cute or something before?'"
Halle concluded her story there, but the question remains: Is saying someone looks prettier in person a compliment or an insult? I think it could be both, depending on the person's tone and genuineness.
Here's how I see it:
A) Compliment: Someone was blown away by your beauty because the photos they've seen of you online didn't do you justice. It doesn't mean the photos you've shared are ugly, but nothing compares to the real thing.
OR
B) Insult: Someone was surprised by your appearance because the images they've seen of you in the past weren't that flattering, but now that they've seen you in person, their opinion of your beauty has completely changed.
